Supporting Disabled Students: Good Practice

3. Induction

Consider providing a specific disabled student induction programme to answer any questions the students may have about support arrangements. This could include the opportunity to:

  • Meet the Disabled Student Support Team eg: Personal Tutor, Designated Academic Disability Tutor.
  • Provide the student with information about the wide variety of disability support available.
  • Provide them with information about the Learner Development Service
  • Attend a campus tour
  • Meet with key members of staff from your faculty/programme

Early identification of difficulties

The programme may want to consider developing a process to enhance the early identification of difficulties particularly undiagnosed specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia.

Example of Good Practice:

The inclusion of an early piece of formative writing, assessed by the students personal tutor. This allows the tutor to identify any obvious difficulties with academic writing. This difficulty does not necessarily mean the student has a disability but it may identify a need for:

  • study skills support that can then be actioned early in the programme
  • a screening by the Learner Development Service for Dyslexia.
