Employability: what has MMU been doing?

 

The Embedding Employability Project provided impetus for a number of initiatives, and Employability now a key focus in faculty plans, programme review, unit descriptors, AME. Below is a list of MMU initiatives around employability, linked to relevant parts of this Employability web site and original documents.

Alumni Engagement Strategy

The Alumni and Development office is helping departments to set up Departmental Alumni Networks.These can aid the achievement of the MMU Employability Curriculum by: monitoring alumni career activity to feed into articulation of graduate prospects, inviting alumni to become involved in student mentoring projects and giving talks to students, aiding employer engagement by asking alumni in position as employers to provide placements and share sector and professional knowledge.

Community of Practice - PDP and Employability

The Centre for Learning and Teaching (CeLT) has established a number of Communities of Practice (CoPs) in themed areas in Learning and Teaching including PDP and placements. The CoPs aim to provide opportunities for learning through networking, discussion and dissemination, advice and encouragement and opportunities for development and evaluation of L and T activities across MMU.

Employability Curriculum Framework

The Framework is a process designed to embed employability skills in curriculum development. It defines a set of employability-focused graduate outcomes which MMU graduates should have achieved on completion of their programme of study and sets out 5 requirements that programme teams must fulfill if their programme is to achieve 'MMU Employability Curriculum' status.

Graduate Teaching Assistants Framework

Covers the employment of full time PG Research students as Graduate Teaching Assistants, and the development of the MMU Postgraduate Passport which will help them use the skills gained to attract employers.

Placements: Institutional Code of Practice

The ICP for placement and work based learning sets out the minimum requirements for students, placement providers and MMU staff engaging with placement or work based activities.

Placements: audit tool

Professional Passport

The MMUPP is a Personal Development Planning process which provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate they have reached a high standard in showcasing their employability skills.

Student Employability Strategy

A five year Strategy for Employability was agreed by Academic Board 2008/9 to guide the direction of the committment in the MMU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy to 'Develop World Class Professionals'.

Threshold Standards

The MMU Threshold Standards define minimum levels of provision that students can expect in all aspects of their learning experience, including support for development of employability skills. The relevant section is reproduced below:

3.5 Support for development of student employability
All students will be provided with opportunities to develop core and professional skills to enhance their employability, and will be supported in recognising and reflecting upon their own skills.
Target Date: 2010/11
Specific Provisions:
All programmes will provide:

  • Opportunities for students to develop core and professional skills within the curriculum.
  • Structured support for developing students’ awareness of core skills, including personal development planning.
  • University-wide support for development of student employability through:
    • Adherence to revised general educational aims and graduate outcomes for all university programmes;
    • Continuing introduction and evaluations of initiatives such as the MMU Professional Passport for taught undergraduate and postgraduate students.
