Project Details

Dr Paul Smith, Senior Lecturer in Chemistry, introduces an adaptive learning project developed for two courses; one part time course for distance learners, and one full time undergraduate programme at MMU. Using a software called CogBooks, Paul has redesigned his course content into a network of online resources that allow students to work through the materials at their own pace, taking a route that changes depending on their needs. By taking diagnostic tests throughout the online material, students are directed to additional materials that may help them understand the topic better, or allow them to skip forward if they have understood it. Paul explains what he sees as the benefits of adaptive learning for his students, particularly how accessible and personalised the materials are and how it enables him to implement a flipped classroom model for face-to-face students.

This project received Scholarship of Teaching and Learning funding from the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching in 2015-16.
