Running an Employability Unit

Project Details

Catherine Elliott, senior lecturer of Sport Management & Marketing, has developed an employability unit for her Level 5 students to give students essential skills to get a job.

Students on the unit take part in a series of activities relating to employability. These include an initial skills analysis, where students reflect on what employability skills they have and any gaps to work on, applying for a fictional job and having an online video interview, and then attending an assessment centre. These activities are documented and reflected upon in an assessed portfolio.

In this Good Practice Exchange video, Catherine goes through the unit in more detail, going through each of the ‘checkpoints’ that students pass in order to complete the unit.

Catherine delivers the unit with her colleague Dr Christopher Mackintosh, and the unit was devised in collaboration with MMU Careers and Employability Service. In the video below MMU Careers and Employability Consultant David Nelson provides more details on using Sonru software to do practice video interviews, and goes through the benefits for staff and students.

David encourages anyone who is interesting in using Sonru in their curriculum to get in touch with him and talk though the possibilities.
