News from the Student Union

Gary Hughes has recently joined Manchester Metropolitan Students’ Union as Democratic Support Co-ordinator.

Gary's role is to work in partnership with MMU to support the learner voice across the whole organisation.

His priority is to design and deliver a course representation scheme that really captures what students expect and want from their education. This will

  • engage a wider and more diverse section of the student community and make learner feedback authentic and legitimate.
  • add real value to the insitutional audit in 2009 as well as to continuous work in MMU on issues like assessment and feedback.

Before joining MMUnion, Gary was Convenor of the West Midlands Area National Union of Students. In this role he worked with students’ unions and institutions in HE and FE to design learner involvement strategies and new and exciting ways to capture and act on the interests of students. Before that, Gary studied Political Science at the University of Birmingham and was elected President of the Guild of Students there. At Birmingham, he led student engagement campaigns to support the significant change undertaken by the University.
